The ES 350h uses a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine producing 186 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque, paired with a front motor-generator rated at 201 hp and 199 lb-ft, all channeled through a planetary-type CVT. Total net combined system output is 244 hp on both FWD and AWD variants.
AWD models add a 54-hp permanent magnet synchronous motor at the rear axle. This unit operates independently of the front CVT and powers the rear wheels on demand. Front-to-rear torque split can vary from fully front-biased, 100:0, to predominantly rear, 20:80, with distribution calculated from wheel speed, steering angle, and acceleration sensor data.
The sixth-generation hybrid system prioritizes the larger front motor-generator more aggressively than the fourth-generation system in the prior ES 300h, keeping the 2.5-liter engine at lower, quieter rpm during routine driving. Refinements include a microfiber sound-absorbing insert in the air intake box, a larger muffler, a flexible coupler between the exhaust manifold and front piping to suppress vibration, and Active Noise Control through the audio speakers.
